Assuming that employment references are in good status is risky in today’s aggressive business world. Companies more than ever are checking job references before finalizing hiring decisions. We focus on three levels of verification – supervisors, associates and direct reports.

Some pertinent questions we ask during an employment reference check are:

  • Why did the candidate leave his/her former company…was it voluntary or involuntary?
  • What were the job functions and did he/she perform them effectively?
  • How would his/her former employer rate the quality of their decision making?
  • Would you recommend this person eligible for rehire? (If not, why?)
  • How did the candidate generally control certain situations?
  • How would you rate his/her leadership qualities?
